From the webmaster... we have just purchased a new Thompson-Center "Hot Shot" .22 rifle from Academy Sports and Outdoors and will be putting the rifle through it's paces in a product review over the next few days. Please check back for field photos and a thorough review.

First impressions of the little rifle are "so far, so good". It is just about what you would expect for a trainer rifle in this price range. The rifle is a perfect scaled down version of the original.

The pro's so far:

The sight picture is beautiful in the way you can only get in a T-C carbine. The rifle points well, is ultra-light and feels solid to handle. The stock and forearm appear to be injection molded plastic of high quality, which is an advantage in terms of weight and durability for a young shooter. "Always On" safety, no manually actuated, external safety. The safety is constantly engaged until the hammer is cocked.

The con's so far:

The barrel is not drilled and tapped for a scope mount. Unknown composition of the trigger, trigger guard and receiver, thick epoxy coat or possibly powder coat in these areas bothers this reviewer, especially if it disguises zinc castings. The front and rear sights are molded plastic.

Overall first impression:

If you are an old time Contender or Encore shooter you will have a hard time getting accustomed to the look and heft of the Hot Shot. Still, it is about what you would expect, or more, for a training carbine in this price range.

From the T-C website:

Get kids started right with the new HotShot™ .22 caliber from Thompson/Center. With stylized looks of our famous Pro Hunter, HotShot has all the features young shooters need and the cool looks of dad’s hunting gun. Safety is paramount and HotShot by design is always “on safe” until the hammer is cocked. This single shot .22 features a T/C precision barrel and peep site so accuracy and easy target acquisition make for an enjoyable day of plinking. Choose from black/blue or Realtree AP™ Camo models. Drilled and tapped for scopes.
